This engine serves as a direct or high-performance replacement for the following North American models:
Honda Prelude VTEC: 1993, 1994, 1995 (Direct Replacement)
To ensure 100% compatibility and maintain the high-RPM reliability of the H22A, professional technicians recommend the following “External Swap” steps:
Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold. JDM versions often use a different EGR setup or lack specific vacuum ports required for North American emissions.
Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are configured for right-hand drive (RHD) and will not reach the ECU location in a left-hand drive vehicle.
Distributor & Sensors: Transfer your original USDM Distributor and Sensors. Honda electronics from the 90s are sensitive to regional differences; using your “known-good” parts prevents ignition timing issues or ECU fault codes.
Timing Belt & Manual Tensioner: While the engine is out, many enthusiasts choose to convert the JDM hydraulic tensioner to a Manual Tensioner conversion kit for increased reliability during high-RPM use.
Oil System: Inspect the oil pan and VTEC solenoid. We recommend installing a new VTEC Solenoid Gasket and Cam Seal now to prevent common leaks down the road.
