JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide

The KA24DE 5-speed is a robust gearbox, but to ensure a seamless “Plug-and-Play” installation into your USDM chassis, professional installers recommend the following steps:

  1. Sensors & Switches: You must transfer your original USDM Reverse Light Switch and Neutral Position Switch. JDM electrical plugs often differ from the North American wiring harness.

  2. Shifter Assembly: Use your original USDM Shifter Handle and Boot. JDM shifters may be angled differently for right-hand drive center consoles.

  3. Clutch Components: While the transmission is out, we highly recommend installing a New Clutch Kit (Pressure Plate, Clutch Disc, Throw-out Bearing, and Pilot Bushing). Reusing old components can lead to premature failure of the new transmission.

  4. Speedometer Gear: Inspect the speedometer sensor/gear on the JDM tail housing. If the gear tooth count differs from your original, swap your USDM Speedo Gear to ensure your speedometer remains accurate.

  5. Driveshaft Alignment: Ensure the JDM output shaft splines are clean. If your Frontier has a different wheelbase (King Cab vs. Crew Cab), double-check that your USDM driveshaft seats fully into the transmission.

  6. Fluid Requirements: Always use high-quality GL-4 Gear Oil. Using GL-5 in these transmissions can lead to synchro degradation over time.
