Subaru Forester: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005
Subaru Impreza RS/TS: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005

Compatibility Note: This is a Non-AVCS (Active Valve Control System) engine. It is not compatible with the 2006+ EJ253 i-Active Valve Lift models without heavy modification.
To ensure 100% compatibility and a “first-turn” start in your USDM Forester, professional Subaru technicians recommend the following “External Swap” steps:
Intake Manifold: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold. JDM versions often have different vacuum routing and different EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) configurations that will trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL).
Engine Sensors: Transfer your original USDM PCV Valve, Camshaft & Crankshaft Sensorsto the JDM block.
Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are built for right-hand drive and will not interface with your chassis bulkheads.
Exhaust Manifolds: Swap your original USDM Exhaust Manifolds. JDM versions may lack specific oxygen sensor bungs required for North American emissions compliance.
Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan; if your Forester is a specific trim with different ground clearance, you may need to swap your original pan and pickup tube.
