This engine is a popular performance replacement for the following North American models:
Subaru Legacy GT (Sedan & Wagon): 2004, 2005 (USDM 4th Gen)
Subaru Outback XT: 2005, 2006
Chassis Compatibility: BL (Sedan) and BP (Wagon).
To successfully install the EJ20X into a North American Legacy GT, professional Subaru tuners recommend the following “Integration” steps:
Turbo & Exhaust: The EJ20X uses a Twin-Scroll Turbocharger and Header system. To use this, you must use the JDM downpipe. If you prefer to keep your USDM exhaust, you must swap your original USDM Single-Scroll Header, Up-pipe, and Turbo onto the JDM block.
Dual AVCS vs. Single AVCS: The EJ20X has cam sensors on the exhaust side (Dual AVCS). The USDM ECU only supports Intake AVCS. Most installers leave the exhaust AVCS unplugged (it defaults to a safe timing) or use a standalone ECU to harness the full power of Dual AVCS.
Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. You will need to swap over your original USDM sensors (Crank, Cam, Knock) to ensure the harness plugs are compatible.
Intake Manifold: We recommend transferring your original USDM Intake Manifold to ensure all vacuum lines, Tumble Generator Valves (TGV) deletes, and sensors match your factory harness.
Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan. If your Legacy uses a specific oil cooler setup, ensure the JDM pan provides the necessary clearance or swap to your USDM pan.
Tuning: Because of the displacement drop from 2.5L to 2.0L, a custom ECU reflash (Tune) is mandatory to ensure correct fueling and timing maps.
